FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I show movies to our patients?
You may show movies to your patients as long as you realize that such exhibitions are “non-theatrical public performances” and require permission from the copyright owner, the movie producer.

How do I obtain permission to show movies to our patients?
Swank HealthCare represents most movie producers and can grant your hospital the necessary permission to show the movies legally. We know that movies are patients’ number one entertainment choice, so we make it simple to get the permission you need.

What constitutes a public performance of a movie?
Showing movies to groups outside the privacy of a home setting is a public showing. Public performances of a movie in a patient’s room or waiting room would be copyright infringement.

If movies are donated to the hospital, can I use them legally?
The manner in which you obtain the movies does not change the public performance setting; therefore, it would not be legal and you must obtain permission.

Do we need permission if we do not charge patients to see the movies?
You still need permission, even if the movies are free to patients and their families.

Is Swank HealthCare the only source of copyright permission for hospitals?
Our parent company, Swank Motion Pictures, Inc. has been the exclusive non-theatrical distributor of most major Hollywood movies for motion picture rentals and licenses for nearly 70 years. In addition to hospitals, we distribute movies and/or copyright licenses to schools, libraries, colleges, cruise ships, and correctional institutions.

Would Swank HealthCare send the movies to us on video or DVD?
You may receive the movies in the format that best suits the equipment at your hospital. However, the most advantageous way to receive the movies is on our Digital Media Player, which is a special computer that works with your closed-circuit television system. It is programmed to play the movies in the patients’ rooms automatically at times you specify.

Does the Digital Media Player replace our existing equipment?
The choice is yours. The Digital Media Player can replace VCRs, DVD players and character generators or, if you prefer, we can provide a switch that allows the Digital Media Player to work along with your existing equipment.

Does the Digital Media Player require a lot of space?
The Digital Media Player is the same size as a desktop computer. There is also a rack-mount model, which allows for even more space savings.

Is the Digital Media Player easy to install?
Yes, the Digital Media Player will arrive at your hospital with clear instructions and requires only a short time to set up. Our Technical team will help you assess any special installation requirements before you get started and is available to help you every step of the way.

Can I add my hospital’s own programs or content to the Digital Media Player?
Yes! In addition to the movies, you can add your own patient education programs, special announcements and other content to the Digital Media Player.

Are the movies available in Spanish?
Yes, you can use two channels to deliver the movies in both languages simultaneously.

How many movies would we receive?
Your customized movie program will include 30 copyright-licensed movies, which will be updated with new movies every 90 days. The Digital Media Player can be easily programmed to show six different movies every day. The movies may be played twice daily resulting in around-the-clock entertainment.
